makeseo sets the SEO title, description, cover image with alt text, social preview and tags too. Ghost creates tags itself when needed.
1 · Get a key — two ways
Both work equally well and look the same. The difference lies in what they're tied to.
Staff Access Token
Faster — four steps, no administrator rights.
- In Ghost, click your profile picture at the top right.
- Open Your Profile.
- Scroll all the way down.
- Click Copy on the Staff access token.
The catch: It belongs to you personally. If you leave the team or your account is removed, the connection ends.
Admin API Key
More durable — tied to the website, not to a person.
- Settings → Integrations
- Add custom integration
- Give it a name, e.g. makeseo.
- Copy the Admin API Key.
The catch: You need administrator or owner rights for this.
2 · Enter it in makeseo
Under Settings › Integrations click the Ghost tile. Two fields:
- Your blog address — the one you log in at, without
/ghostat the end. If you copy it along, we cut it off. - Key — the one from Step 1.
makeseo checks right away whether the access works — and whether it's even allowed to publish. An access with the Contributor role can't do that in Ghost; we point this out rather than letting it fail on publishing day.
3 · Choose the presentation
In your blog's design
The post takes on the fonts, colors and spacing of your theme and fits seamlessly among your other articles. Boxes like the callout and pro tip appear as normal text — the content stays, the styling doesn't.
In makeseo's design
The post brings its own look: table borders, callout boxes and the pro-tip styling are preserved. On a dark theme the light reading area stands out clearly.
What Ghost does differently
- The post is a single block in the Ghost editor. We store it as an HTML card — that's the only way it arrives unchanged. You can edit it in makeseo; in Ghost you'll see it as one card instead of individual paragraphs.
- No newsletter send. makeseo sets no email parameter at all when publishing. Your members get no mail from us.
- Tags are created automatically. Tags that don't yet exist in your Ghost are created by Ghost itself on save.
- Later edits in Ghost are preserved. We only update a post if it has changed in makeseo — and in doing so we check whether it was edited in Ghost in the meantime.
When something gets stuck
The messages word for word — and what's behind them.
- Ghost rejected the access
- First check whether you really pasted the Admin API Key or a Staff Access Token — not the Content API Key. It sits right next to it and has no colon. Second: a Staff Access Token belongs to a person; if they leave the team, it loses its validity.
- No Ghost interface answers at this address
- This means the address you log in at — without the /ghost part. If you copy it along, we cut it off; everything else must be correct, including https.
- The access has the Contributor role
- A Contributor can't publish posts in Ghost — only write drafts. Use the Staff Access Token of a person with the Author, Editor or Administrator role, or an Admin API Key from a Custom Integration.
- A post with this slug already exists
- Ghost allows each slug only once. Usually there's still a draft or an older post with the same address part in your Ghost. Remove it or rename it.
- The post looks different from the makeseo dashboard
- That's the presentation mode. "In your blog's design" adopts your theme's fonts and colors; "In makeseo's design" brings its own look. You can switch it by saving the connection again.
